The Wagirra Trail and Wonga Wetlands: New Developments

An exciting new tourism project along the banks of the Murray River, from Albury to Tocumwal, has just been announced. Two of the areas marked for development include The Wagirra Trail and The Wonga Wetlands, so we thought we’d take a closer look at these popular Albury attractions, as well as the changes have been proposed.

The Wagirra Trail

The Wagirra Trail covers a distance of 6km along the Murray River and is suitable for walking, running or cycling. Starting at the Union Bridge, the trail extends to the Wonga Wetlands with a number of access points along the way. All ages and abilities will enjoy The Wagirra Trail, and there’s plenty to see and do along the way. Highlights include:

Earlier this month it was announced that the Wagirra Trail will be extended to comprise an additional 12km of pathway, as well as an extension to the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk. Upgrades to the facilities at Noreuil Park and Oddies Creek Park have also been announced.

Wonga Wetlands

The Wagirra Trail finishes at Wonga Wetlands, an area of significance of the river to local Aboriginal people and

“…an ecosystem of lagoons and billabongs covering around 80 hectares. A haven for wildlife and a mecca for birdwatchers, photographers, bushwalkers and families.”

These 80 hectares of floodplain feature three walking tracks to explore, ranging from 0.5km to 2.5km, so you can spend as much or as little time here as you want. Other highlights of the Wonga Wetlands include:

  • Over 154 identified species of bird (view the full list of birds or enter your bird sightings)
  • Aquatic Environment Education Centre
  • River red gums over 600 years old
  • Wiradjuri campsite
  • Native flora and fauna
  • Picnic and barbecue facilities

The video below gives a good overview of this unique area.

Part of the recently announced $11 million dollar Murray River tourism project includes a new bike track around Wonga Wetlands and a new education centre.
